Agency History

Families United, Inc. is a private, for-profit corporation founded in April of 1986 by Kathi J. Lange, ACSW, LCSW, LMFT of Attica, Indiana. The Agency started as an entrepreneurial effort through a collaborative pilot project with the Warren County Division of Family and Children.

Mrs. Lange started the Agency by providing home-based services to three families in their own homes with the goal of preventing the children from being removed and placed in out-of-home care. The success of this project led to the subsequent expansion and development of the company which now provides services to Fountain, Warren, Benton, Tippecanoe, Montgomery, Putnam, Boone and White Counties. A multitude of services have been developed which include: Family Preservation Case Management, Home-Based Therapy, Mental Health Counseling, Sexual Abuse Treatment Programs for victims and offenders, the Healthy Families Indiana Program, and Anger Management classes.

Mrs. Lange is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She has a Child Development Associates Credential as well as being a CDA trainer; she received her B.S. in Psychology from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College with a thirty hour concentration in Early Childhood Education, her Master's Degree in Social Work is from Indiana University with a concentration in planning and management and she is a graduate of the Family Therapy Institute in Cincinnati. Mrs. Lange received the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Governor Evan Bayh in 1990 and she was named Social Worker of the Year in 1993 (Region IV, NASW). In 1994, she received the Evans-Hay Award from the Mayor of Attica, Indiana which is the highest civic award the city bestows to citizens who make significant contributions to the community. In 2003, she received the Program Excellence Award from the Department of Corrections/SOMM Program. In 2004. she was a YWCA "Salute to Women" finalist. In 2005 she was appointed to the State Child Fatality Review Committee.

Approximately 40 employees provide services that are funded through federal and state grants, private fees, EAP's, and/or insurance. Many clients are court ordered to participate in services.
